Global Climate Action

At the twenty-first session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) in Paris, it was agreed that mobilizing stronger and more ambitious climate action by all Parties and non-Party stakeholders is urgently required if the goals of the Paris Agreement are to be achieved.

In decision 1/CP.21, the commitments from all actors are recognized, including those launched through the Lima–Paris Action Agenda, as well as the urgent need to scale up the global response to climate change and support greater ambition from governments.

At COP 22 in Marrakech, a High-Level Event on Accelerating Climate Action was held to highlight outcomes from the Action Events throughout the conference and culminated with the launching of the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action; a new framework to catalyse and support climate action.

Led by The Climate Group in partnership with CDP, as part of the We Mean Business coalition

By 2020 it will be the ‘norm’ for all businesses to set a 100% renewable power goal. 1000 of the world’s most influential companies will have made a public commitment to 100% renewable power, joined RE100 and be demonstrating progress towards this goal. These 1000 companies will have influenced a further 500,000 companies to set 100% renewable targets.

Roadmap and work plan

Our RE100 strategy sets targets for the number of companies to be recruited to the campaign on an annual basis. In 2016-17 we are increasing our focus in India and China. We are also working with a number of partner organizations (e.g. ShareAction) to accelerate recruitment and help members to reach their 100% renewable electricity goals (e.g. WBCSD Lctpi, Rocky Mountain Institute’s Business Renewables Center). Each of our teams in America, India and China has a work plan and there is an overall communications strategy.

Campaign has grown to 81 companies (at Climate Week NYC 2016), from 14 companies when the campaign was launched at Climate Week NYC in 2014. They are creating demand for over 100TWh of renewable electricity – more than enough to power Morocco three times over.
The Annual Report, published in January 2016 , showed that the 45 companies in the campaign at that time were on average half way to achieving their 100% goals, with companies in the retail sector having switched the largest amount of electricity to renewables (10,764,000 MWh) and those in the IT sector being closest to achieving their 100% goals (averaging at 64% progress).
We are currently analyzing data for the 2017 Annual Report and expect to report on geographical demand and strategies for going 100% renewable.

Quantitative Impact

By tracking progress of members to being 100% powered by renewables, RE100 is showing how businesses are adapting their energy strategies, taking climate action measures and driving the clean energy transition. Through our online case studies, events and media work we highlight how members are adapting their business models to address climate change – for example, IKEA is now stocking solar panels and LED lighting in its stores.

RE100 does not track the carbon savings of companies as they work towards their 100% renewable power targets, rather data on electricity consumption and use of renewables (including different options deployed and where).

We highlight how much money our members invest in renewable power and climate change initiatives – for example Goldman Sachs
set a 10-year target to deploy $40 billion of capital in financing and investment to scale-up clean energy globally. Since then, they have mobilized more than $33 billion for solar, wind, smart grid and other clean technologies.
